Job Purpose
Provide expert guidance and leadership in the airline’s strategic and operational initiatives related to fuel efficiency and environmental compliance. This includes managing cross-departmental fuel-saving programs, ensuring accurate and timely emissions reporting under applicable Emission Trading Schemes (ETS) and CORSIA, and overseeing the
implementation and tracking of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage in alignment with regulatory requirements and corporate sustainability goals.
Main Responsibilities - Tasks
- Design and implement low-cost, high-impact fuel-saving initiatives across the airline’s short-haul network.
- Work closely with operations control, flight crews, engineering, and dispatch to embed best practices.
- Track fuel KPIs daily and lead regular fuel performance
reviews. - Ensure timely and accurate reporting of CO₂ emissions under EU ETS, UK ETS, Swiss ETS, and ICAO CORSIA.
- Manage the MRV process, including monitoring plans and verifier coordination.
- Monitor changes to European climate legislation and assess operational impacts.
- Support SAF procurement strategies aligned with EU mandates and supply availability.
- Maintain records of SAF uplift, blending, and certification.
- Collaborate with airports, fuel providers, and platforms to facilitate SAF uptake.
- Consolidate and verify data on fuel burn, emissions, and SAF.
- Provide validated inputs to sustainability and ESG teams.
- Support internal audits and external environmental verifications.
- Promote cost-effective environmental performance across operations.
- Stay updated on fuel-saving technologies and digital tools.
Main Accountabilities
- Fuel savings and improved fuel efficiency performance.
- Operational adoption of fuel-saving procedures (e.g., reduced flap landings, route optimization).
- Continuous improvement in fuel efficiency metrics.
- Compliance with emissions regulations and avoidance of penalties.
- Verified and audit-ready CO₂ reporting.
- Adapted operational practices to meet regulatory requirements.
- Compliance with SAF blending mandates and contribution to decarbonization goals.
- Proper GHG accounting and eligibility under ETS/CORSIA.
- Increased SAF usage within cost and logistical constraints.
- Accurate environmental reporting and internal dashboards.
- Reliable data for sustainability disclosures and indices.
- Positive audit outcomes and strengthened compliance posture.
- Informed decisions on technology adoption and innovation.
Main Relationships
- IT Department: To coordinate the integration and maintenance of fuel systems and software.
- Compliance and Safety: To ensure all projects and changes comply with regulatory standards and to conduct risk assessments.
- Training Department: To coordinate the training of flight crews on new systems and procedures.
- Ground Operations: For implementing and managing changes to operational procedures that impact ground services.
- Maintenance Department: To ensure technical changes are accurately reflected in flight operations procedures.
- Other Flight Operations Departments: For overall coordination and ensuring all operational aspects are covered.
- Regulatory Bodies (AESA, IATA, IOSA): For obtaining necessary approvals and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.
- Suppliers/Providers: For managing relationships with vendors that supply fuel systems and services.
- Other Airlines: For benchmarking and sharing best practices within the industry.
- Industry Forums and Conferences: For staying updated on new technologies and industry trends.
Education
- Degree in Aeronautical Engineering
- In-depth understanding of flight operations systems and processes, including cost
efficiency in sustainability planning. - Strong familiarity with aviation regulations and compliance requirements, as knowledge of regulatory standards.
- Knowledge of project management principles and practices
- Understanding of IT systems and software relevant to flight operations
Experience
- 1-3 years of experience in similar positions, ideally within flight operations or related field in performance or fuel which is preferred.
- Experience in managing large-scale projects within an airline or aviation context.
- Proven ability to work with regulatory bodies and obtain necessary approvals (e.g., AESA, IATA)
- Experience in digital transformation initiatives and implementing new technologies in flight operations
- Experience working with EFB systems or similar aviation technology.
- Experience conducting and leading audits, internal and external.
