Job Purpose
Oversee and enhance navigational operations within the flight operations department, adhering to international regulations and company standards, to ensure the efficient, safe operation of all flights and maintain timely, accurate navigational information, while mentoring junior staff and driving continuous improvement projects.
Main Accountabilities
- Ensure all flight information and documentation are current and accurate, minimising operational disruptions by comparing new and old versions of data and implementing necessary changes.
- Maintain the reliability of in-flight navigation systems by conducting thorough integrity checks and ensuring databases are free of corruption.
- Develop the skills and knowledge of junior staff, ensuring they understand
procedures and can perform their tasks to a high standard. - Enable the safe and efficient planning of new routes, especially those involving
challenging geographical or political conditions, by conducting thorough analyses
and collaborating with other departments. - Ensure EFB applications are functional, up-to-date, and meet the needs of pilots
and operations by managing updates and resolving issues with vendors. - Successfully implement projects by coordinating tasks, managing timelines, and
ensuring that project goals are met. - Facilitate smooth audit processes and ensure compliance with regulatory
standards by preparing necessary documentation and evidence. - Enhance operational efficiency and reduce manual workload by continuously
seeking out and implementing innovative solutions. - Reduce fuel consumption and operational costs by continuously improving flight
routes in collaboration with the fuel management team.
Participate in regulatory - Ensure compliance with new regulations and maintain operational standards by
staying updated on regulatory changes and implementing required adjustments. - Provide accurate flight time estimates to support scheduling and operational
planning, impacting both pilot scheduling and flight network planning. - Resolve issues efficiently and maintain operational continuity by addressing and
resolving navigation-related queries and incidents. - Ensure all stakeholders have access to the latest navigation procedures and
changes by managing the documentation and publication process. - Coordinate with the rest of OPCOs the specifications to be included in each
version of the software & align with iOCC management the proper deployment of
new functionalities. - Step in as a technical expert during high-demand periods, ensuring that critical
tasks related to flight navigation, route analysis, and database updates are
handled efficiently and without delay, including resolving navigational issues,
maintaining operational continuity, and preventing disruptions in flight operations,
and ensuring that navigation systems remain reliable, compliant, and fully
operational during peak workloads.
Main Responsibilities - Tasks
- Manage the review and update of navigational data and airport information every 28 days.
- Ensure the loading and integrity checks of the aircraft's navigational databases.
- Act as a mentor and provide training to Navigation Technicians.
- Coordinate and manage complex route studies and feasibility analyses.
- Maintain and test Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications and coordinate with vendors.
- Serve as the project manager (PMO) for cross-departmental navigation projects.
- Prepare and provide documentation and evidence for internal and external audits.
- Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities.
- Collaborate with the fuel management team to optimise routes for fuel efficiency.
- Participate in regulatory updates and implement necessary changes in
navigation procedures. - Prepare block times based on historical data and operational efficiency.
- Handle navigation-related queries and incidents from pilots and other departments.
- Manage the documentation and publication of navigation procedures and changes.
- Be the LIDO Flight System SuperUser in charge of all new version tests, data maintenance and serviciability assurance.
- Perform the role of technician when the situation or workload peaks in the department require it.
Main Relationships - Flight Dispatchers: To provide route information, manage the navigation system, and resolve issues related to flight plans.
- iOCC Management: To coordinate with iOCC Management the resolution of all issues realted on LIDO Flight Plan System.
- Fuel Management Team: To collaborate on route optimisation for fuel efficiency.
- Training Department: To coordinate training requirements for new routes and procedures.
- Maintenance Department: To ensure timely updates of navigational databases in aircraft and coordinate any required technical support.
- Project Management Office (PMO): To lead and manage navigation-related projects.
- Documentation Team (MAR): To provide updated navigation data for pilot documentation.
- Safety Compliance Department: To prepare for and support internal audits and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Lido/Navigation System Vendors: To manage updates, resolve issues, and implement new functionalities.
- Lido (Navigational Data Provider) - For updating, maintaining, and troubleshooting navigational data and systems.
- Air Traffic Control (ATC) Authorities (e.g., Eurocontrol, Enaire): To coordinate airspace usage, route changes, and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Regulatory Bodies (e.g., EASA, IOSA): To ensure compliance with aviation regulations and standards.
- Airport Authorities and Other Airlines: To manage navigation-related communications and compliance for specific routes and operational changes.
- Training and Safety Teams: For addressing navigational training needs and ensuring that all navigation- related safety issues are resolved.
- Network and scheduling department: To follow-up on the studies being performed, resolve operational doubts and align the conditions to be taken into account in the details of the shared study.
- Pilots: To address queries and incidents regarding navigation and ensure they have up-to-date information.
Education
- Aeronautical Engineering degree required, as stipulated by aviation authority
regulations and company standards. - Comprehensive understanding of flight operations, including planning and executing flight routes, and the ability to interpret and manage navigational data.
- Proficiency with navigation systems, specifically Lido, and other related software and applications used for flight planning and navigation.
- Familiarity with Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications, including both iPad and
Windows-based platforms, is essential for managing updates and resolving issues. - Knowledge of international aviation regulations and standards, including AIRAC
cycles, and the ability to implement and comply with these standards effectively.
Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in an airline's engineering or flight operations department is required, and experience specifically in a flight navigation role is highly desirable, as it ensures familiarity with the processes and tasks involved in flight dispatch, airports & routes analysis.
- 737 MAX experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in mentoring and training junior staff, ensuring they understand procedures and can perform tasks to a high standard.
- Experience in leading or participating in cross-departmental projects, with a focus on improving procedures and systems.
- Involvement in preparing for and supporting internal and external audits, particularly those conducted by regulatory bodies such as EASA and IOSA.
- Experience working with regulatory bodies and implementing compliance measures within flight operations.
- Proven track record of identifying and implementing process improvements and automation opportunities within the operational framework.
